How to Get Bones

Why Bones matter

Bones are a progression bottleneck in 100 Days on Chunk. Early boss chunk recipes—and the totems those bosses unlock—ask for Bones alongside more common mats like wood and stone. Players who ignore Bones until a recipe turns red waste days expanding pretty biomes they cannot convert into day multipliers.

This guide covers the practical sources players actually use: world bone piles, chunk craft RNG, and quarry chests, plus how to spend Bones without bricking a run. Pair it with Bosses and Raids when you are ready to fight, and Survive 100 Days for timing inside the full route.

Source 1 — Bone piles on chunks

While exploring crafted and starter platforms, watch for piles of bones as world props/loot nodes. They are easy to walk past when you are tunnel-visioned on ore. Habits that help:

  • Sweep the rim and interior of every new biome chunk on the day you place it.
  • Loot piles into a dedicated chest labeled mentally as “boss mats” so they never get vendored or dropped in a panic.
  • Revisit older pads after storms, raids, or big terraforming—piles can be obscured by builds or night clutter.
  • In co-op, call Bones in chat; one teammate hoarding silently slows the whole server’s first boss.

Piles are not an infinite printer. Treat each as a scarce pickup and plan crafts around realistic counts.

Source 2 — Chunk RNG while expanding

Bones are also described by players as a possible outcome tied to chunk variety—you raise odds by crafting and exploring more platforms rather than AFKing on the starter pad. That does not mean spam twenty unfinished islands overnight.

Smart RNG farming:

  1. Expand in daylight with same-day walls (see Getting Started).
  2. Prefer chunks that also advance other goals (wood, quarry, sand) so Bones hunting is not your only yield.
  3. Clear each new chunk fully—nodes, chests, piles—before crafting the next.
  4. Keep hunger and weapons ready; RNG routes that skip food create void deaths that cost more than they earn.

Lumberjack helps you afford more chunk crafts per hour. Ninja helps you survive the nights those crafts create. Neither replaces actually looking for piles.

Source 3 — Quarry chests

Quarry biome content is a favorite mid-game farm. Quarry chests and high-rarity quarry outcomes can spit Bones alongside ores. Prioritize unlocking and securing a quarry pad when iron and chest loot become the limiting reagents for tools and boss prep.

Quarry tips:

  • Wall the quarry chunk immediately; open pits near void edges are raid nightmares.
  • Bring inventory space—full bags mean you leave Bones on the ground for the void (or a teammate).
  • Run quarries after you can defend nights; dying on a rich chest reset feels terrible.
  • Legendary or high-tier quarry moments are clutch, but common quarries still contribute if you clear them consistently.

If chat says “Bones are impossible,” they usually skipped quarry loops and pile sweeps.

Spending Bones — boss chunks first

Bones are for boss chunk crafts, not decoration. Before you hit craft:

  • Confirm the full recipe (Bones + wood/stone/other uniques).
  • Stage weapons, food, and a repair stack.
  • Tell the server if you are in public so nobody starts a vanity project with the last Bones.
  • Know which boss you are opening—Grounder/Graveyard style early content versus later desert-gated fights that also want Artifacts.

After the kill, secure drops and evaluate the totem/multiplier. Do not dump leftover Bones into experimental crafts until your first multiplier nights feel stable.

Farming loop you can repeat

  1. Day start — cook, repair walls, check Bones chest count.
  2. Craft or clear one high-value chunk (quarry when available).
  3. Sweep for piles and chests; deposit Bones immediately.
  4. Optional second sweep on older pads.
  5. Night — defend; do not greed pile hunts in the dark on open rims.
  6. When recipe + gear ready — boss chunk, then totem decision per Survive 100 Days.

Class notes for Bones routes

  • Explorer — slow but fine; just be thorough.
  • Lumberjack — more crafts per session → more RNG rolls.
  • Ninja / Vampire — safer clears when quarry and boss nights overlap.
  • Engineer — cheaper crafting gates get you into quarry/boss recipes sooner.

Ability numbers are on All Classes.

Common Bones mistakes

  • Crafting the boss the moment you hit the minimum Bones with zero walls
  • Leaving Bones in hotbar where a death drops them into the void
  • Ignoring quarry because “it is just ore”
  • Expecting codes to spawn Bones—promos are inactive as of October 2026 on the Codes Hub, and they would not replace this farm anyway
  • Confusing Bones needs with Artifact needs and wandering desert too early

Sweep piles, run quarry, expand on purpose, spend Bones on bosses you can actually finish. That is the whole Bones economy.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Where do Bones spawn?

Loot bone piles on chunks, keep expanding for chunk RNG, and open quarry chests. Store them before nights get messy.

What are Bones used for?

Primarily boss chunk crafts that unlock stronger progression and day-multiplier totems. See Bosses and Raids.

I have diamond tools but no Bones—what now?

Tools do not replace pile sweeps and quarry loops. Clear every new chunk fully and prioritize a secured quarry pad.

Do I need Artifacts for the first Bones boss?

Early Bones bosses are separate from later desert Artifact gates. Read How to Get Artifact when recipes start asking for Artifacts.
